Kat Edwards Postel, LCSW

I’m so glad you’re here. I’m a therapist—an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)—and I specialize in grief and loss, children and teens, parenting, major life changes, and trauma. Through diving deep into the intersections of loss, resiliency, and life, clients who work with me develop self-compassion and a sense of being seen, known, and understood. I’m emphatic about listening to your body, mindfulness, exploring the stories we tell ourselves, and rebuilding safety within yourself.

As a recovering people-pleaser and perfectionist, I really get the impact of a loud inner critic, and together we can heal your relationships to that critic and all the other powerful parts of yourself. As a fellow parent and former teacher, we’ll work collaboratively to problem solve in parent coaching. I also have extensive experience with teens and adults, including life changes, relationship troubles, trauma, and terminal illness. Together, we can journey through all the types of loss and healing that life can bring.

I’ve lived in Texas most of my life, and in Austin for the last 7 years. On the weekends, you can find me trying to read 3 books at a time, running, gardening, attempting to train my cat, or watching Gilmore Girls with my two tween/teen daughters.

I love delving into deep feeling with curiosity, compassion, and gentle humor. I believe that one of the great gifts of being human is to be able to share our experience with another and feel truly seen and valued, just as we are. I believe we heal in therapeutic relationship.

I find working with guided imagery meditation, embodied awareness, and the nervous system helps people to find freedom and ease.

Through work with me, my clients are able to home in on their values, explore self-compassion and find intrinsic worth. This insight often leads to profound shifts in the way they see the world.

I’m particularly passionate about working with children through play therapy and creative expression therapy. I also love working with parents of young children, and facilitating heart-felt connection with couples. I work with clients through a family systems lens and incorporate somatic and parts work.

I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia in English Literature and an MSSW from the University of Texas in Social Work.

I have been a healthcare provider for over 25 years in a variety of clinical settings including college health at both Stanford University and The University of Texas at Austin. Over time, I noticed a trend of mental health issues underlying my patients' health complaints that often started earlier in life. I felt drawn to the counseling portion of my visits and a growing desire to be a more proactive part of addressing mental health issues. Additionally, I wanted to give back and share the knowledge I had gained through personal experiences going to therapy as an adolescent as well as caring for profoundly gifted and neurodiverse family members. Shifting careers to social work and counseling children and families has begun to address that need and I am excited to continue the work.

As a psychotherapist, I am deliberately mindful of what it is like to go through the counseling process. I want clients to feel like they can show up as they are and always know that the person sitting across from them will be compassionate, supportive and authentically relate. My priority is for individuals to feel heard, validated and encouraged to work toward their goals and hopefully laugh from time to time. I believe in capitalizing on each person’s strengths and collaborating to uncover creative ways to move forward and address their unique needs while learning more about themselves. Communication is key and I welcome feedback at any time. We can always learn from each other.

As a child, adolescent, family focused therapist, my practice is primarily informed by child development, attachment, cognitive behavioral theory, and family systems theory. I support individuals facing any variety of challenges and have specific experience working with those who are struggling with trauma, emotional regulation (anxiety/depression/anger), neurodiversity (ADHD/autism), relationship issues, parent-child/sibling/family conflict, parent coaching, school behavioral issues, life transitions and coexisting medical issues. My practice involves a variety of therapeutic techniques including assisting clients develop healthy thought patterns and coping strategies through cognitive behavioral therapy, helping children and adolescents explore and process difficulties through art and play, coaching parents on positive and effective communication with limits via Parent-Child interactive Therapy and Attachment-based Family Therapy, aiding clients in learning to be present in the moment without judgment through mindfulness and learning self regulation skills, as well as somatic (mild-body) processing.

In my freetime I enjoy rowing on Ladybird Lake, listening to music, walking my puppy, Leeloo, or snuggling my cat, Cali, hanging out with friends, getting creative, or watching Survivor and eating Cabo Bobs with my husband and two children.

I approach my work with an awareness that the reasons we seek therapy are extremely individual. I strive to work with clients on the goals they bring, whether immediate and specific or long term and broad, and to adapt my approach as these goals evolve. I am intentional about noticing and normalizing—seeing the life stage clients are in and how this might be amplifying difficulties—and emphasizing the normalcy of struggle, pain and shame.

Having had the benefit of a therapeutic relationship during some life transitions of my own, I am passionate about the power of connection in therapy. From experience and training, I am also passionate about the power of turning toward internal conflicts rather than away from them, reflecting on the stories we tell ourselves and nurturing self-compassion. I bring a relational approach to work with adults, adolescents, couples and groups. I have a particular interest in working with young adults navigating life transitions, individuals experiencing depression and anxiety, body image issues, family conflict, grief and loss, and perinatal mental health challenges.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism from Washington & Lee University, a postgraduate certificate in existential, humanistic and psychodynamic psychotherapy from Regent’s University in London, and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin.
